Sustainability
Our Commitment
Inspired by our beautiful home city, Fairmont Waterfront’s green practices within the hotel and into the neighbouring communities rank us as a ‘5 Green Key‘ Hotel. Here are some of the many ways we do this:
POLLINATOR PROGRAM
We welcomed our first colony of bees in 2008 and host 3 hives with approximately 40,000 - 60,000 bees on-site each summer (with more bees in our off-site hives). Our bees produce approximately 200 lbs of honey on-site. We also have an observation hive that allows guests to view the bees in action and have added a pollinator hotel - the ‘bee and bee’ in 2015. In 2017, we first partnered with Wayward Distillation House with branded custom liqueurs and later gin made from our rooftop honey.
SINGLE-USE PLASTICS
As of 2022, Fairmont Waterfront has removed all single-use plastics from our guest rooms, offering reusable water bottles in guest rooms instead of single-use bottles and filtered water stations on each guest floor throughout the hotel, swapping out refreshment centre snacks for products with responsible packaging, and replacing all miniature bathroom amenities with full size Le Labo bathroom amenities. Our guestroom key cards also transitioned from plastic to custom-made wooden cards in 2022, further reducing the amount of plastic used throughout the hotel.
FOOD WASTE DIVERSION
We partner with Vancouver Food Runners and La Tablée des Chefs to donate surplus food from banquets and events to people in need. Our food donations through Vancouver Food Runners went to local shelters.
CARBON CALCULATOR
To reduce the carbon emissions from their meeting or stay by calculating their impact and offsetting it using our Carbon Net Zero Calculator.
