Five Hotels Where You Can Train Like an Olympian

Prep for a triathlon, take lessons with an Olympic swimmer, and more.

Delayed a year due to the pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics are set to kick off on July 23. And even though Japan’s borders currently remain closed to international travelers, we’ll still be tuning in from afar (while dreaming of our next trip to Tokyo), amazed by the talent of some of the world’s best athletes.  In pursuit of our own athletic endeavors – whether that’s training for a triathlon or finally learning the proper backstroke form – we’ve gathered a few hotels where travelers can channel their own inner Olympian. These hotel programs offer guests the tools and support to work toward their personal best; throw in some dreamy island locales and plum post-workout amenities, and we think they all deserve a spot on the medal podium.

Albany – The Bahamas

This contemporary outpost on New Providence Island is well known for its athletic facilities. (Golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are two of Albany’s co-owners, and spying a pro athlete in the gym is a common occurrence here.) Guests have access to a team of personal trainers, state-of-the-art exercise equipment, an outdoor training facility, a lap pool, and a racquet complex, for starters. Many come for the four-day ReBoot, a fitness program that combines intense exercise with high-tech body composition testing, nutritional coaching, and more. Other diversions at the 80-room resort include multiple oceanfront dining venues, a family-friendly water park, a cinema, and a private marina. Virtuoso travelers receive breakfast daily, a $100 resort credit, and more.

Caribbean views at Amanyara.

Amanyara – Turks & Caicos

Travelers love Amanyara for its stunning, secluded accommodations – each of the resort’s 38 pavilions and 18 villas sits on a 1.5 acre parcel and has its own infinity pool, walled garden, or private ocean cove. The resort’s new Legends Program aims to bring guests together for a series of fitness and training clinics led by some of the world’s most-lauded athletes. Tennis pro Maria Sharapova, stand-up paddleboard champion Candice Appleby, and NBA player Kevin Love have already swung by, and the resort is set to announce more marquee guests soon (ask your travel advisor to keep an eye out). While the program includes the expected boot camps and clinics, down time is thoughtfully worked in, so guests can swap stories with the pros over cocktail hours and intimate dinners. Virtuoso travelers receive breakfast daily, a $100 dining credit, and more.

Triathlon training at the Four Seasons Resort Hulalalai.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai – Hawaii

Triathlon training is more fun in paradise. Fresh off the heels of a $100 million renovation, Hawaii Island’s 243-room Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is primed to host its fifth annual Triathlon Training Experience from December 6 to 10. The program features five days of individualized coaching from six-time Ironman World Champion Dave Scott, who tailors his approach to each participant’s goals with one-on-one video analysis and pre-arrival phone consultations that cover everything from nutrition to strength training. Athletes can expect an intense week of workouts, but with ample time to relax, recover, and explore the resort. (Don’t miss King’s Pond, the newly restored 1.8-million-gallon swimmable aquarium.) Virtuoso travelers receive breakfast daily, a $100 dining credit, and more.

Swim, bike, and run at the Mandarin Oriental, Canouan.

Mandarin Oriental, Canouan – Saint Vincent & the Grenadines

Can’t make it to Hawaii in December? The Mandarin Oriental, Canouan’s new self-guided triathlon might be a good fit. The intimate 39-room resort, which fronts one of the Caribbean’s largest coral reefs, is on Canouan Island, a gem in the Grenadines that’s quickly becoming a beloved A-list retreat. The triathlon “course” takes advantage of the resort’s 1,200 untouched acres, including private running trails, suggested swim spots, and off-road bike routes up to the 877-foot peak of Mount Royal. Guests can complete a full triathlon in one day or embark on various legs of the route at their leisure – this is technically vacation, after all. Virtuoso travelers receive breakfast daily, a $200 dining credit, and more.
